Last week I traveled to the remote former coal mine site under restoration by Renew Appalachia, were we convened a series of training and capacity building workshops with local residents and support organization staff from across the region. This project was funded through a USDA Rural Development Business Enterprise grant.

Eastern Kentucky is a region rich in resilience, creativity, and natural resources. At Regenerative Farms, we believe in harnessing these strengths to support local entrepreneurs and foster sustainable economic growth. This past month, our team traveled to the heart of Appalachia to lead a series of dynamic workshops aimed at equipping local innovators with the tools, skills, and inspiration needed to turn their ideas into impactful businesses. Here’s a look back at the highlights from our trip and the progress made on the Renew Appalachia reclaimed mine site.

Building Business Ideas

Our first workshop kicked off with an entrepreneurial think tank, where participants shared their unique business visions and explored strategies to bring them to life. From organic farming initiatives to value-added food products and eco-tourism ventures, the diversity of ideas reflected the creativity and determination of the local community. With guidance from our facilitators, attendees learned how to refine their concepts, identify target markets, and draft actionable business plans. The collaborative environment sparked conversations and connections that will no doubt continue to inspire innovation across the region.

Technology Tools for Start-Ups

Running a successful business in today’s world requires leveraging the right technology. In our second workshop, participants gained hands-on experience with digital tools designed to streamline operations and boost visibility. From creating polished business plans and communications videos using the latest in AI apps, to developing investor pitch decks and practicing their pitch among their peer business owners, to exploring e-commerce platforms like Etsy for reaching broader niche markets, we walked a group of local entrepreneurs through practical steps they are now using to establish their new business and grow an online presence. Additionally, we introduced business management frameworks for decision making including holistic goal setting, and discussed good practices for time management, team communications and planning, budgeting, project management, and customer relationship management, empowering attendees to manage their businesses efficiently and sustainably.

Hands-On Forest Farming

One of the most exciting aspects of our trip was exploring the potential of forest farming on the Renew Appalachia reclaimed mine site. This unique landscape is a testament to the power of restoration, offering new opportunities for cultivating high-value crops such as ginseng, goldenseal, and shiitake mushrooms. Our participants got their hands dirty, learning the fundamentals of forest farming through interactive demonstrations and site tours. They discovered how to integrate native plant species with regenerative practices, creating systems that are both productive and ecologically sound.

A Vision for Eastern Kentucky’s Future

These workshops were more than just educational sessions; they were a celebration of Eastern Kentucky’s potential. By empowering local entrepreneurs with knowledge and resources, we aim to support a regenerative economy that prioritizes environmental health, economic resilience, and community well-being. The collaborations sparked during these sessions underscore the importance of working together to build a thriving future for the region.
