Empowering Maasai Women to Lead the Fight Against Poverty & Climate Change in The Great Rift Valley

At Regenerative Farms, we’re passionate about creating real-world change by empowering rural women with the skills, resources, and support they need to lead in the fight against gender inequity and climate change. And we’re thrilled to share some exciting updates!

Recently, we had the privilege of completing the PermaGarden training—an innovative approach to help women around the globe increase food security while adapting to climate instability. We are teaching this method to our Global Network of Regeneration Hub partners. Local leaders like Dalmas Tiampati, Founder of Maasai Centre for Regenerative Pastoralism, are using it to teach their communities to withstand pervasive drought, and provide hope and tools enabling them to proactively transform their important landscape in Central Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. Together with you support we are saving lives and protecting wildlife around the globe. Developed by Warren Brush and his team, this method equips farmers to build climate-resilient food systems in even the toughest conditions. It’s practical, effective, and the training videos and materials are available online in English and French for all to access.

Through partnerships and programs like these, we are able to support women farmers in remote regions like Eastern Kenya, where climate change threatens children’s lives everyday from malnutrition diseases, and where women experience extreme levels of isolation and oppression. Support for leaders like Dalmas who are offering them life saving locally-led solutions are desperately needed. By teaching women in his klan how they can terraform their land, capture rainwater, and plant life-saving superfood trees, they can see with their own eyes their power to regenerate ecosystems, feed their families and transform their lives. Access to these trainings in their local language, where they live, is unprecedented, and is essential for restoring critical ecosystems for endangered wildlife like the Bongo, a forest antelope that lives a precarious existence in the few remaining forsest patches in this biodiverse region.

Here is Dalmas, in his natural classroom, introducing the women of his klan to the PermaGarden training program in August 2024. Dalmas will spend the next 12 months training the women of 3 communities in Ejiado County Kenya and helping the communities begin to install permagardens to address prevalent malnutrition diseases. In this area 1 in 3 children suffer from stunting after more than a decade of drought destroyed their ability to provide enought food through their traditional food and animal husbandry practices. Dalmas is seeking funding partners to help him build a Regeneration Hub and expand upon his work teaching holistic management, and spearheading the community in planting and regenerating thousands of resilient superfood trees. As the klan leader, he is dedicating his life to restoring resilience in support of preserving his culture and the wildlife who share his ancestral homeland of the Great Rift Valley.
